Romania is the first country to sign the memoranda for the EEA and Norwegian Grants 2014-2021, amounting to a total of 502,5 million euros

Bucharest, October 13th, 2016 Mr Cristian Ghinea, the Minister of the European Funds and Mrs  Elsbeth Tronstad, State Secretary within the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have signed today, October 13th, 2016, the Memoranda of Understanding under which Romania benefits of  502,5 million euros external grants under the EEA and Norwegian Grants 2014-2021.

"Thanks to the efforts of the Romanian Government and of our partners from Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, we have managed to conclude these agreements in a short time, which will allow a longer period for the preparation and implementation of projects. As I had mentioned on previous occasions, I believe that the EEA and Norway Grants represent a model of good practice in accessing external grants, focusing primarily on results ", Cristian Ghinea stated.

"It is important for our government that the EEA and Norway Grants be used to strengthen efforts and cooperation for economic development and progress in Europe. This agreement, signed with Romania today, will constitute the framework of this collaboration, " said Elisabeth Vik Aspaker, the Norwegian Minister for EEA and European Affairs.

The two agreements concluded today provide for both the institutional management framework and for the decided programs, with the main objectives, the financial allocation, special areas of interest.

In line with the priorities of Romania and Donor States, the EEA and Norway Grants 2014-2021 will aim at such areas as: local development and fighting poverty, improving the situation of Roma, public health, innovation, business environment and SMEs, NGO sector, research and education, energy efficiency, renewable energy and the environment, heritage and cultural exchange, justice, correctional services and home affairs.

About the EEA and Norwegian Grants

The EEA and Norway Grants represent the contributions of Iceland, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Kingdom of Norway to reduce economic and social disparities within the European Economic Area and to strengthen the bilateral relations between the Donor States and Beneficiary States.

In the 2009-2014 programming period, Romania will benefit, by 2017, of an allocation of 306 million euros, supporting projects in areas such as public health, children and youth at risk, cultural heritage, research and scholarships, the NGO sector, poverty reduction, justice and home affairs, environment, etc., with an absorption rate of 68% on 1 August 2016. As of October 13, 2016, the financial framework 2014-2021 of these funds will be implemented in Romania, with a total allocation of 502.5 million euros.
